The project is based on a real-world airport that was under construction at the time.

The client, in this case the Chhattisgarh state, wanted an airport that contributes to building an identity of Chhattisgarh, a new born state, on the map of India by promoting tourism and its steel business. The idea is that the departing visitors should take with them a memory of the state as a souvenir. To add a flavor of the local culture, the design should incorporate local material and craftsmanship of local artisans.
At the beginning of the project, I researched the key problems that travelers face and the resulting mood transitions during navigation. This is presented as experience mapping on Page 3. From the analysis, I was convinced that efficient space planning should be the focus in this project.
My take on this development involved completely reworking space planning in order to reduce walking distances and incorporate additional functionalities in the floor plan. This was a significant challenge as I needed to make sure that the new space planning was consistent with the plethora of norms that apply to airport design.
